Rare Beatles Album Turns Up In Stirling Controversial Record Could Raise Thousands For Charity

THE sale of a rare Beatles album will save the lives of some of the world's poorest children.

It's the latest boost to the Record's appeal asking readers to hand in unwanted compact discs and vinyl records to their local Oxfam shops.

Harry Goodwin, the uncrowned king of pop photography

Broad-shouldered, slim and as Mancunian as waiting for a tram in the rain, 83-year-old Harry Goodwin is the uncrowned king of pop photography in Britain. He was the official photographer on Top of the Pops from 1964 to 1973, his stills used as a backdrop when the hit-makers were away on tour and for the chart rundown, which meant no photos of moody lads on fire escapes – Goodwin’s are all classic portraits of icons.

Ono looks forward to McCartney show

Yoko Ono has said she was "looking forward" to watching a special show headlined by Sir Paul McCartney this weekend.

John Lennon's widow, who is visiting Liverpool for the weekend, also said she would attend Stella McCartney's unveiling of her latest fashion range on Sunday.

Speaking about the Liverpool Sound event at Liverpool FC's Anfield stadium where Sir Paul will perform, she said: "Of course I am going to be there. I'm looking forward to it."

Is this the 50 greatest drummers of all time?

Another day, another list – this time it’s Gigwise.com’s 50 greatest drummers of all time. Apart from being ‘great’, it’s unclear what the criteria are. It’s no real surprise to see Bonham and Moon take the top spots but with Ringo Starr only just scraping in at number 43, you have to wonder…

Alexei Sayle's guide to Liverpool

If you stand in the beating heart of Liverpool on the waterfront and look west you can almost see Dublin, and beyond that New York, hunkering just over the horizon.

To me, Liverpudlians have broader horizons, and the characters in a city are formed by what the city does. In a place like Birmingham people have spent the past 300 years taking apart and putting together tiny little machines; if you stand in the centre and look west from Birmingham you can almost see Wolverhampton.

Yoko’s emotional visit to Lennon’s art exhibition

YOKO ONO made an emotional visit to Liverpool yesterday to visit a collection of John Lennon’s artwork.

Wearing her signature white trilby hat, Yoko said she was choked when she walked into the Daily Post and Echo building on Old Hall Street and saw a huge picture of John.

Yoko visited The Art of John Lennon – the largest single collection of his drawings, prints and lithographs shown in the UK.

She said: “This is incredible, it’s some building, so beautiful with the natural light.

“It’s so great the exhibition is in Liverpool, it’s so prominent and it goes without saying it’s a great year for it to be here. This was his home town and he had an incredible love for it.

The Beatles: Two days in the life

When Honey magazine commissioned photojournalist Michael Ward to follow and photograph an up-and-coming music group called The Beatles in February 1963, he had never heard of the Liverpool-based rock band.

And he was not impressed when he heard The Beatles play:

"I thought, Oh my God. How awful. What terrible noise they¹re making. There¹s no syncopation. They're playing all on the beat," he says.

Weekend with the 08 ‘wow’ factor

LIVERPOOL will this weekend go into “overdrive” as the number of Capital of Culture events reaches a crescendo with Sir Paul McCartney’s Anfield concert tomorrow evening.

With sunny weather expected to hit a 21C high today, tens of thousands of shoppers are also expected to flock to the city’s new Liverpool One development for its first weekend.

Radio 2 celebrates Liverpool, European City of Culture

Radio 2 begins two weeks of celebration of Liverpool's year as European City of Culture by attempting to confound all of our preconceptions of the jewel of the Mersey as a hub of pop music, and concentrating on it as a hub of pop music. Presumably the less groovy stuff will be covered in the second week, or perhaps farmed out to Radios 3 and 4. Still, it does make you wonder about the advisability of confounding stereotypes by pandering to them.

John Lennon's Artwork On Display In Annapolis

He was a world renowned composer and musician, and with song-writing partner Paul McCartney they wrote hundreds of hits. But did you know that John Lennon was also an accomplished artist?

'IT'S A VERY POWERHOUSE SHOW'

More commonly referred to as Pete Best, he played with Lennon, McCartney and Harrison from 1960 to 1962 on the Beatles' first tour through Hamburg, Germany, before he was kicked out and replaced by Starr.

Yoko Ono generously invites us along for the trip. In her show “Touch Me,” Ono revisits an earlier work, “Cut Piece,” a performance from 1965 where she asked people to cut away pieces of her clothing. A second version, performed in Paris in 2003, is played along with the first on four different monitors, each slightly out of synch with the next.  A hard day’s photoshoot

(Fab five: Macca meets some musical legends in Borehamwood)

Back in the early Sixties I went to our now demolished cinema to see the same film four times. It was called A Hard Day's Night, and starred The Beatles.

It had a modest budget but became a worldwide hit thanks to the Fab Four's natural style.

They called it the Swinging Sixties, but in reality they say that it was about 800 people in London who formed the 'in-crowd'.

Concert review: Best, band give a musical tour of Beatles vibe

Imagine the Beatles, recording their audition tape for Decca records. Flash forward 47 years to Awful Arthur’s, at Roanoke’s Towers Shopping Center.

The Beatles’ drummer from 1961, Pete Best, was sitting behind a drum kit at Awful’s, slapping out the beat of “Three Cool Cats,” pretty much the same as he had on that long-ago demo. His hair was longer, and gray. Now 66, his face is etched in lines.

Imagine coming home from your civil service job in Liverpool, England, as you have every day for the past 20 years or so. Your wife of 40 years is waiting patiently inside with dinner on the table.
