Fab discovery is a ticket to the past for couple

A CHANCE find during a cleaning spree has sparked a couple’s memories of The Beatles’ 1964 Cardiff gig – when they hardly heard a note.

Gordon and Maureen Hyndman, from Whitchurch, Cardiff, will stump up £150 for a pair of tickets when Paul McCartney returns to the city this year.

But the couple were reminded they paid just eight shillings and sixpence to see their musical hero 46 years ago when they came across their ticket stubs from the Fab Four’s Capitol concert.

The Birth of British Rock: photographs by Harry Hammond

A touring exhibition from the V&A Theatre Collection, featuring 100 photographs of many of the rock 'n' roll stars of the 50s and 60s. Includes three interactive exhibits and a collection of original Portsmouth pop memorabilia.

Beatlemania at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena

The Cowichan Lake District Skating Club held its annual skating show on Friday night with the music of The Beatles as the theme. There was a larger crowd than last year to see the performances by about 25 members of the local skating club, with many more parents in attendance than in previous years.

The Festival Files: Imagine Music & Arts Festival

The zealous fusion of music and a counterculture movement brought on during Woodstock ’69 will return in the form of another music festival that is predicted to be one of the summer’s biggest events.

The Imagine Music & Arts Festival, derived from John Lennon’s song “Imagine”, is a two-day charity event that is tentatively being held from July 10-11 in Toronto’s Downsview Park. Organizers are expecting about 350,000 people to attend each day and have already been in contact with musicians like Lady Gaga, Nickelback and the Foo Fighters according to an article in The Torontoist.

McCartney grooves at son's gig

Sir Paul McCartney turned heads after he showed up to watch his son James' most recent live gig - and began singing and dancing to the tunes, according to reports.

The Beatles legend and his socialite girlfriend Nancy Shevell were among the crowd of 60 who saw the 32 year old perform at Audio bar in Brighton, England on Monday (08Mar10).

 Band to support Macca's son

One of Oswestry’s top bands is to support the son of Sir Paul McCartney in a major gig in Birmingham this month.

The Kayas hope the concert with James McCartney will help them break out onto the national stage.

A day in the life of The Beatles

If you weren’t around in the ’60s or never got to see The Beatles perform, you are in luck. The Fab Four might be the next best thing to the real Beatles because they live a day in the life of the Beatles everyday when they perform hits such as “A Day in the Life,” “Penny Lane” and “Hey Jude.”

Revolver in Birkenhead going back to the 1960s

REVOLVER in Birkenhead will turn the clock back to the 1960s for a celebration of the decade which heralded the dawn of classic rock.

WE'RE BACK!

 Beatles Prosper as Capitol Sinks

Many images bring the “Beatles” to mind. Cover art for the album, “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” the picture showing the group crossing London’s Abbey Road, even pictures of the Capitol Tower in Hollywood.

Yes, the Capitol Tower. Built in 1954 as Capitol’s home office, looking like a stack of records, Capitol’s name on top, it quickly became Capitol’s trademark identifying the label on which the Beatles first American albums appeared. That Capitol would acquire record rights to the Beatles was no sure thing, in spite of their being signed to Capitol’s parent, EMI, for world-wide record rights.

John Lennon-inspired Nowhere Boy gets DVD and Blu-ray release

The critically acclaimed directorial debut of Sam Taylor-Wood gets a DVD and Blu-ray release in a matter of weeks - Nowhere Boy.

As you probably know, it's the film of John Lennon's teenage years in 50s Liverpool, from first band The Quarrymen to his early relationship with Paul McCartney and George Harrison, all of which culminates in the formation of The Beatles and their historic trip to Hamburg. Aaron Johnson takes the lead role, with support roles for Kristin Scott Thomas as Aunt Mimi and Anne Marie Duff as Lennon’s mother Julia.

Ozzy Osbourne to attend John Lennon's birthday festivities in Liverpool

Ozzy Osbourne and his wife/manager Sharon Osbourne will head to Liverpool, England to mark the 70th birthday of John Lennon, according to the Liverpool Echo. The Osbournes were invited by Liverpool Lord Mayor Mike Storey to commemorate the late Beatle's birthday, which falls on October 9th. Ozzy is a huge Beatles fan and has even named "The Long And Winding Road" as the song he'd use as the theme for his life. An Echo columnist wrote, "I imagine (Ozzy) will want to see all the sights and maybe stay in the John Lennon suite at the Hard Days Night Hotel."

Fringe Festival review: Let It Be Beatles

One night only – sold out. The Beatles still draw a crowd and a good one at that, crammed in as they were at the Queens (Cavern) on Friday night to witness Adelaide's Let It Be Beatles cover band cover the band.

Over a two-hour-plus set of hits from Rubber Soul, Revolver, Abbey Road and Sgt Peppers, and a few more besides, John, Paul, George and Ringo, alias Mick, Troy, Mick and Paul (I think), re-created in a Wright Street way a smidgin of the hysteria that once engulfed the Fab Four.

Legendary Searchers here to keep the 60s swinging

THEY emerged in one of the most exciting decades in pop music history, alongside The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Rolling Stones.

Today, almost half a century later, sixties favourites The Searchers continue to pull in the crowds.

"It's nuts isn't it? We didn't think we'd to be playing for this long. Most bands expect to last a three or four years not 48!" bassist Frank Allen tells the POST.

Sir Paul McCartney flies in to see Stella McCartney's show

IT’S always nice to get a little support from dad.

Particularly when he’s a man who is no stranger to a little success in life.

Fashion designer Stella McCartney was delighted when her former Beatle father watched the unveiling of her new collection.

Sir Paul flew to Paris to see the launch of talented Stella’s autumn and winter designs for 2010/2011.

The pair posed for the press after Stella presented the new range of her ready-to-wear designs in the French capital.

A proud Sir Paul was accompanied by his friend, Nancy Shevell. See also  Stella McCartney RTW Fall 2010

Paul McCartney Might Play Rentschler

'The Long And Winding Road' could lead to Connecticut for Paul McCartney's latest tour.

A leading Beatles authority says on the websiteThe Examiner, that there are plans for McCartney to play at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

"The Cute Beatle" has already scheduled dates in Arizona, Florida and California, as well as some dates in Europe this summer. There again Paul McCartney at Rentschler? Probably not

Yoko Ono: Back to where she once belonged (Times Online)

Yoko Ono is forever associated with the Beatles, yet her aristocratic family life in imperial Japan, long before she met John Lennon, was equally intriguing. For the first time, she opens up the Ono family album.

She may not look it, but Yoko Ono, a woman who has survived three decades of tragedy, debunking and myth, is now 77 years old. For many of those years, she has been blamed, perhaps unfairly, for the break-up of the world’s best-loved musical partnership: she was the woman who came between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, insisting on being in the studio as the band disintegrated. She also cradled Lennon just a few seconds after the fatal shots from a revolver rang out on a cold New York night in December 1980.

As she has grown older she has become — perhaps inevitably — more reflective about her past. She has mellowed and in recent years visits to Japan have become more frequent. She returned with Lennon several times in the 1970s at a point in his life when he had all but disappeared from public view.

 Ringo Returns to Fallsview

Legendary rock musician and former member of The Beatles, Ringo Starr returns to Fallsview Casino with his All-Starr Band for two shows highlighting the June 2010 concert line-up at Fallsview Casino.

Starr and the members of the All-Starr Band will spend two weeks at Fallsview preparing for their upcoming tour which begins at Fallsview on June 24 and 25. Returning as All-Starr Band members are rock, jazz, and blues artist Edgar Winter, keyboardist Gary Wright, and drummer Gregg Bissonette, while newcomers include guitarist Rick Derringer, former bassist of Mr. Mister, Richard Page and former Romantics guitarist Wally Palmar.

Retro Review: John Lennon – John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970)

John Lennon’s first solo album, released in December of 1970 is his post-Beatles stardom is his proclamation that he is no longer one of four – finding his individual voice by writing songs concerning his personal demons, love and politics. Not surprisingly though, there are still traces of the Beatles here besides Lennon’s famous vocals; Klaus Voorman, the artist who created the Revolver cover plays bass and Ringo Starr is on the drums.

Rock of Pages: How the Beatles Destroyed Rock 'n' Roll

In the field of rock histories, Elijah Wald's How the Beatles Destroyed Rock 'n' Roll: An Alternative History of American Music is a breath of fresh air. Rather than retreading familiar material and taking it out for another run around the track, Wald takes a look at those left behind when critics write the history of music.

Strawberry Fields Forever

It was 12:30 a.m. early Monday morning, and after performing Beatles’ songs for more than three hours, The Threetles were ready to leave the stage at Wings to Go at Katie’s.
But the crowd had other plans.

About five people had surrounded the Rehoboth Beach-based tribute band on stage, trying to get them to play their last requests. Others were in the back chanting, “One more song!”

John Lennon UK Car Commercial Reignites Rock in Ads Debate

Whenever rock & roll appears in advertisements, some fans protest. A few years ago, Rolling Stone tracked the Worst Rock Sell-Outs Ever! (”All you need is Luvs” … diapers) and the Best Rock Sell-Outs Ever! (VW adopts Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon”). It’s the debate that rages every time the Moldy Peaches give a song to a Bahamas resort, Dr. Dre teases Detox for Dr. Pepper, or Bob Dylan promotes Pepsi. One rocker with experience in this arena, Ryan Adams, complained about being nagged over his Gap ad. But in truth, rock stars have appeared in dozens of Super Bowl commercials.

Exhibit celebrates Carnaby heritage

Carnaby Street, epicentre of Britain's Swinging '60s revolution and spiritual home of fashion milestones like the miniskirt, is marking half a century of trend-setting.

Once home to a pest house for plague victims, the famous street has had a long and varied history, but it was its influence on fashion, music and youth culture in the 1960s that first propelled it onto the world stage.

Mary McCartney on her family recipes

The heir to the most famous vegetarian dynasty in the West is telling me what she loves to eat. Lentils? Wheatgrass? Birkenstocks, fried and sliced?

“Mmnnn, white food,” says Mary McCartney, rolling her eyes with pleasure. “I would eat nothing but crisps, and bread, and cheese, if I let myself. Some people say, ‘you’re a vegetarian who doesn’t like a vegetable’.”

On the road from Abbey Road

There’s a reason why an over-40 viewer of Mike Myers’s 1999 Austin Powers sequel The Spy Who Shagged Me will likely guffaw when the hapless Dr. Evil names his moon-based “laser” “The Alan Parsons Project” – and why it’s just as likely that anyone under 30 will be quietly puzzled.

That’s because there was a time, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the Alan Parsons Project was at the zenith of the pop world, zinging off a string of ambitiously conceived and lushly recorded progressive rock concept albums that struck a chord with listeners for whom the likes of Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer were a little too jarring.

How Wales helped The Beatles make it big

His recently announced concert at the Millennium Stadium this summer will mark the first time Sir Paul McCartney has played in Wales for more than 30 years. Here, Nathan Bevan looks back on The Beatles legend’s time in the country, from his early days rehearsing in the basement of a Harlech barber shop to the Fab Four’s final UK gig in 1965.

THEY called it the Magical Mystery Tour and for The Beatles in 1967 it was as much an apt description of their new-found love of transcendental meditation and spiritual enlightenment as the title for their new album.

The 26 June concert at the Millennium Stadium will be the ex-Beatle's first gig in Cardiff for nearly 31 years.

 The Bootleg Sixties, The Riverfront

Over the past few years I’ve been fortunate to see some great artists from the 1960s perform at the Newport Riverfront, so I have to admit, I wasn’t sure what I’d make of a band that wasn’t around in the 1960s playing that particular eras music.

I needn’t have worried; our hosts for the evening, The Overtures exploded onto the stage against a back drop of pop culture imagery and historic newsreel footage to the opening bars of the Beatles From Me To You and proceeded to play a lively set that encompassed everything from The Hollies to Simon and Garfunkel.

Starr co-wrote all of the tracks, assisted by a variety of musicians. With the help of music legends Joe Walsh and Paul McCartney on a number of tracks, the main appeal of Starr’s latest work is the proof that rock gods stick together, no matter how many years go by.

Elvis, Dylan, Beatles and more items go up for bid in massive rock auction

I hear about celebrity auctions all the time, and most don't really grab my attention. But occasionally, a sale does excite me, even if I can't afford any of the items.

Today tons of music memorabilia went up for bid at www.gottahaverockandroll.com. If you're a fan of the Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson, U2, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix or Madonna -- and I think this covers about 99.2 % of the population -- you'll want to take a peek.

Now, everybody can get a look at 'Everybody's Fine'

When released theatrically in December, "Everybody's Fine" was expected to turn into a feel-good favorite.

That didn't happen, even though the comedy drama has quite a bit going for it, including Robert De Niro as a widower embarking on a cross-country trip to reconnect with his grown children. Other cast members include Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell ("Choke").

 Ringo Starr: Y Not

Forty years after his first solo excursion, and almost half a century since he joined the Beatles, Ringo Starr has started producing his own material. Hence, perhaps, the title of his 15th album, to which one might justifiably respond: "But Y?" It's not a complete write-off
