Paul McCartney backs Israel animal rights group over fur ban Singer and former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has lent his support to Israeli animal rights activists fighting to pass a bill banning all fur trade in Israel. If the bill passes, Israel will be the first country to ban the export, import and sale of any kind of fur. Last week, the bill was reviewed by the Knesset Education Committee in preparation for a second and third reading. Paul du Noyer is quiet, reserved and polite. It is hard to put together the calm man before you with the illustrious career he has behind him – one cannot help but expect the stereotypical editor – but then again, du Noyer is anything but average. | Paul McCartney to Take Back Song Rights from EMI, Mail Reports Paul McCartney is poised to take back the rights to his songs and those of his band Wings from the music company EMI Group Ltd., the Mail on Sunday reported, without saying where it got the information. Mark David Chapman, a psychotic, pulled the trigger, assassinating the musician/peace activist in December 1980. So who killed Lennon, the person or the brain? That's the kind of question neuroscientists, lawyers and judges are wrestling with today, says Michael Gazzaniga professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and head of the SAGE Center for the Study of Mind. |
A QUIET REVOLUTION by YOKO ONO – speech for Oxford University, March 10, 2010 A butterfly is hopping from flower to flower. Oh, good. I think. The butterfly is busybodying as usual. Peace reins. But what is the butterfly really doing? When a tiny movement like the flapping of the wings of a butterfly brings about a big change elsewhere, it’s called the butterfly effect in physics. I’ve just heard this one… so I don’t know it’s legitimacy. But if they don’t call it a butterfly effect, there should be a word that expresses this phenomenon. A breeze created by a bunch of kids dancing bringing a stop to an argument going on in the other side of the globe unknown to the dancers? Why not? The latest news is that even a couch potato is useful for us, in that their breathing helps to balance the atmosphere. The world and it’s mechanics are still very much a mystery. Yoko QandA day – Fridays on Twitter Friday QandA day: Ask me an interesting question, tag it #yokoQandA and I’ll answer 10-15 every week on IMAGINEPEACE.com love, yoko | Lots of attitude, energy at this 'Rock' show (“Beatles Crowd,’’ on view in the exhibit “Who Shot Rock & Roll,’’ captured Beatlemania at its height in 1965. (Central Press Ltd.) Do people still wonder who, who, who wrote the book of love? They don’t have to wonder who shot rock ’n’ roll. Pretty much everybody did: Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Dennis Hopper, Andreas Gursky, even Lloyd Shearer. Yes, that Lloyd Shearer, of Parade magazine fame. There are examples of work by all of them — including Shearer’s 1956 picture of a shirtless Elvis Presley — among the 120 or so images in “Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present.’’ The show runs at the Worcester Art Museum through May 30. London Calling: the Beatles, The Stones and cooking hash badly Barry Miles's colourful vignettes of post-war London when he mixed with the likes of Paul McCartney and Marianne Faithfull are a delight. Bridget Galton talks to him. Phillyist Reviews... Larry Kane's Ticket to Ride
In 1964, Larry Kane was a young radio newsman in Miami who accidentally stumbled into a part of rock & roll history. When the Beatles prepared to begin their now-infamous 1964 U.S. tour, Kane wrote to Beatles' manager Brian Epstein to try and arrange an interview. Epstein, mistakenly thinking the letter came from one of the most important newscasters in America—for reasons best explained by Kane himself—invited the 21-year-old to accompany the band on the entire tour. Kane didn't want to, but as a young pup in the business, he had no choice—his boss made him go. Arts Festival Review: Ravi Shankar This was a concert of classical Indian music of the highest level. Anoushka Shankar played the first half before her father joined the band. She was accompanied by two Tamboura players (stringed drones), a wooden flautist and Tabla player. Anoushka's rich and dazzling Sitar was matched in conversation with Tanmoy Bose on Tabla, who at first lagged behind the beat a little but very soon hit the groove with her. There were tinges of rock and pop music woven into the scalar raga improvisations. MORE Sixties nostalgia is due to swamp the stage of the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, as The Bootleg Beatles celebrate 30 years together. Last weekend popular bands from the era had the audience on its feet with a Solid Silver '60s tour which celebrated its 25th anniversary. On Saturday the four musicians billed as "the world's premier Beatles band" mark three decades of creating a tribute to the Fab Four with a welcome return to the Halifax theatre (8pm). The long-running Beatles tribute show featuring the Beatles show band Yesterday has left the Tropicana. Produced by Las Vegas-based Yesterday Productions, the show had been at the Tropicana since the summer of 2007 and as we wrote about in a 2008 cover story, at one point there was no end in sight for the band’s Atlantic City gig. | New photos of Beatles' John Lennon appear after 40 years
(John Lennon and Yoko Ono who is talking to 16-year-old Gail Renard Photo: CATERS) The extraordinary photos of the musician and Yoko Ono, taken during their famous Bed-in for Peace in Montreal in 1969, snapped by Life photographer Gerry Deiter. He was the only photojournalist allowed to witness and document the bed-in for the full eight days and managed to capture pictures of the couple totally off-guard. But his story about them, due to run in Life magazine, was ditched at the last minute for an article on the Vietnam war. Ringo Starr says he wrote new album on synthesizer Ringo Starr revealed that for his latest album, Y Not, he actually recorded the songs from the ground up by creating the tracks alone on synthesizer. Ringo mainly recorded the new collection at his home in L.A. taking a more active production role than in recent years. JAMES MCCARTNEY is looking forward to getting back to where he once belonged as he heads to Scotland as part of a UK tour. The 32-year-old son of Paul McCartney spent a chunk of his childhood on the Mull Of Kintyre, where his parents recorded many of their hit songs with the group Wings, including the 1977 mega-hit Mull Of Kintyre. James, who bears a striking resemblance to his old man, has finally committed to follow in his footsteps and those of his late mother Linda by pursuing a career in music. And he will play two low-key Scottish dates next week. | Paul McCartney Up and Coming Tour Tickets Paul McCartney is a legend in rock ‘n roll music, rising to fame as part of the Beatles. 'Beatles Deeper Undercover' belongs on every serious Beatle fan's bookshelf Kristofer Engelhardt's original "Beatles Undercover," published in 1998, has been one of the most used books in our Beatles library. The original book cataloged everything you'd ever want to know about the Beatles' outside musical activities. Now Engelhardt has written a revised edition, out this month, called "Beatles Deeper Undercover" that updates the original. The new book is actually thinner than the old one (375 pages vs. 523 pages). The difference is the new volume has fewer pictures and a more streamlined layout. Milestones: Author Barry Miles recalls relationships with Beatles, Burroughs ... If something interesting was happening in London during the 1960s, chances are Barry Miles was part of it. Although his experiences straddled many social circles, Miles was primarily associated with The Beatles. He ran Zapple, the spoken-word division of the band's Apple record label. He witnessed numerous recording sessions, attended the "Sgt. Pepper's" photo shoot and took part singing in the live "All You Need is Love" television session (that's him to George Harrison's left). He introduced Paul McCartney to hash brownies and, rather notoriously, helped introduce John Lennon to Yoko Ono. | Paul McCartney Signed Hofner Bass At Fairfield Auction Over 300 lots of local estate goods will cross the block at Fairfield Auction March 21st. This will be my first show on the Isle of Wight and I’m looking forward to a rollicking night of rock n’ roll”. The UK got a recent taste for Paul’s live show last Christmas when he bought his 2009 ‘Good Evening Europe’ tour to a climatic and memorable finale at London’s 02 Arena, his only UK show of 2009. Reviews for the show were phenomenal and prove that Paul McCartney is a live experience that no one should miss. |

The cross hanging in front of his open-necked shirt was an incongruously chunky adornment on the black-clad singer. Whether Paul McCartney’s 33-year-old son was burdened by a more symbolic weight though, was harder to gauge. It can’t be easy forging a musical identity with the knowledge kicking around in the back of your mind that Penny Lane and Eleanor Rigby didn’t exist before your dad wrote them. And sure enough, the function of the first few songs, played by McCartney’s young band at a grungy canter, was to relax a frontman who — albeit without the hair and wrinkles — seemed to have inherited his father’s entire face, but not his extrovert ease. |
Larry's 'Ride' with the Beatles WHICH ONE of these doesn't go with the others? Partying with hookers. Smoking pot. Homosexual seduction. Larry Kane. If you said "Larry Kane," you're wrong, because that was a trick question. The first three are among the juicier elements of "Larry Kane's Ticket to Ride," the venerated local TV newsman's entertaining and often eye-opening program about his decades-long relationship with the Beatles. Produced by local rock-music archivist Denny Somach, "Ticket to Ride," being presented every Friday and Saturday this month at the Franklin Institute, is a multimedia program that offers the ultimate insider's account of life in the whirlwinds that were the Fab Four's 1964 and '65 North American tours. | James McCartney, Hoxton Bar and Grill, London In profile, he has his dad's pursed mouth and nose. Full on, the face becomes more eerily identical the more you stare at it. No DNA tests would ever be needed to confirm that this is indeed Paul McCartney's only son, playing his first official London gig at the age of 32. Start listening as well, though, and the fantasies that intrude aren't of the Beatles' Shea Stadium triumph, or Abbey Road genius. I start to imagine Paul McCartney's Liverpool suburban upbringing shifted in time to the early 1990s, with him now listening to Nirvana and the Cure, not Elvis Presley, at night, and instead of conquering the world, remaining a talented, almost content weekend rocker, sometimes musing what might have been: McCartney, in other words, if the sparks of genius and luck never struck. That seems James's honourable level. | Get back to the sound of The Beatles Do you want to know a secret? The Bootleg Beatles are coming back to Reading. Phil Creighton twists and shouts with John Lennon – aka Neil Harrison It was 30 years ago, not quite today, when a group of friends sat down and decided We Can Work It Out and went from being a quartet of musicians to a Fab Four. Fab discovery is a ticket to the past for couple A CHANCE find during a cleaning spree has sparked a couple’s memories of The Beatles’ 1964 Cardiff gig – when they hardly heard a note. Gordon and Maureen Hyndman, from Whitchurch, Cardiff, will stump up £150 for a pair of tickets when Paul McCartney returns to the city this year. But the couple were reminded they paid just eight shillings and sixpence to see their musical hero 46 years ago when they came across their ticket stubs from the Fab Four’s Capitol concert. Band to support Macca's son One of Oswestry’s top bands is to support the son of Sir Paul McCartney in a major gig in Birmingham this month. The Kayas hope the concert with James McCartney will help them break out onto the national stage. A day in the life of The Beatles If you weren’t around in the ’60s or never got to see The Beatles perform, you are in luck. Beatles Prosper as Capitol Sinks Many images bring the “Beatles” to mind. Cover art for the album, “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” the picture showing the group crossing London’s Abbey Road, even pictures of the Capitol Tower in Hollywood. Yes, the Capitol Tower. Built in 1954 as Capitol’s home office, looking like a stack of records, Capitol’s name on top, it quickly became Capitol’s trademark identifying the label on which the Beatles first American albums appeared. That Capitol would acquire record rights to the Beatles was no sure thing, in spite of their being signed to Capitol’s parent, EMI, for world-wide record rights. Yoko Ono: Back to where she once belonged (Times Online) Yoko Ono is forever associated with the Beatles, yet her aristocratic family life in imperial Japan, long before she met John Lennon, was equally intriguing. For the first time, she opens up the Ono family album. She may not look it, but Yoko Ono, a woman who has survived three decades of tragedy, debunking and myth, is now 77 years old. For many of those years, she has been blamed, perhaps unfairly, for the break-up of the world’s best-loved musical partnership: she was the woman who came between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, insisting on being in the studio as the band disintegrated. She also cradled Lennon just a few seconds after the fatal shots from a revolver rang out on a cold New York night in December 1980. As she has grown older she has become — perhaps inevitably — more reflective about her past. She has mellowed and in recent years visits to Japan have become more frequent. She returned with Lennon several times in the 1970s at a point in his life when he had all but disappeared from public view. | Ringo Returns to Fallsview Legendary rock musician and former member of The Beatles, Starr and the members of the All-Starr Band will spend two weeks at Fallsview preparing for their upcoming tour which begins at Fallsview on

John Lennon’s first solo album, released in December of 1970 is his post-Beatles stardom is his proclamation that he is no longer one of four – finding his individual voice by writing songs concerning his personal demons, love and politics. Rock of Pages: How the Beatles Destroyed Rock 'n' Roll In the field of rock histories, Elijah Wald's How the Beatles Destroyed Rock 'n' Roll: An Alternative History of American Music is a breath of fresh air. Rather than retreading familiar material and taking it out for another run around the track, Wald takes a look at those left behind when critics write the history of music. It was 12:30 a.m. early Monday morning, and after performing Beatles’ songs for more than three hours, The Threetles were ready to leave the stage at Wings to Go at Katie’s. A few years ago, Rolling Stone tracked the Worst Rock Sell-Outs Ever! (”All you need is Luvs” … diapers) and the Best Rock Sell-Outs Ever! (VW adopts Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon”). It’s the debate that rages every time the Moldy Peaches give a song to a Bahamas resort, Dr. Dre teases Detox for Dr. Pepper, or Bob Dylan promotes Pepsi.
